In a nutshell: AquaSave — a DePIN that helps users save on water bills and earn from water data — is migrating from Solana to peaq and bringing its award-winning water-saving device onchain. As the layer-1 for AquaSave, peaq will help tackle one of the planet’s most urgent challenges: water waste. You will soon be able to purchase an AquaBank device and start earning tokens for saving water.

From running taps to real change

Over 4 billion people lack access to clean water — yet one U.S. household can waste nearly 40,000 liters a year. And while “life isn’t fair” may be a trite truism, this is water we’re talking about. Not money, not housing, not internet access — water. Without it, life isn’t unfair. It’s impossible.

So we can probably all agree that our water systems need an upgrade. Smarter, more versatile — and yes, more decentralized. The goal? Optimizing heating and consumption to move the world closer to true sustainability.

AquaSave’s AquaBank device does exactly that. It connects with water piping and keeps already-heated water in circulation, reducing both the workload on boilers and overall water consumption. This helps individuals and businesses reduce their water and electricity bills by an estimated 24%.

By sharing their water use data with the DePIN, AquaBank users can also earn rewards in AquaSave’s token. The non-Web3 version of this device, patented by AquaReturn, has been on the market for about a decade. With AquaSave, the device is now getting an upgrade that will bring it onchain.

In 2024, AquaSave won the Climate Award at the Solana Renaissance Hackathon and already has 10 pilot AquaBanks up and running. This year, it will also be running an official pilot project with the Balearic islands and Aqua Return involving the deployment of 240 AquaBanks across various businesses on the archipelago.

The device has also already caught the eyes of Wilo, a major German water pumping manufacturer that is now distributing AquaSave’s technology to other countries. Additionally, AquaSave is expanding its reach by partnering with distributors across the globe, ensuring that its innovative water-saving technology becomes accessible to businesses, municipalities, and institutions worldwide.

As part of its integration with peaq, AquaSave will create self-sovereign identities on peaq for all of its users, integrating these with its app and DePIN. It will also outfit all devices on the DePIN with their self-sovereign peaq IDs, used to sign the data generated by these devices, which will be recorded on peaq in an accurate and verifiable manner. AquaSave will also launch its native token on peaq and implement its rewards mechanism on the network powering the Machine Economy.
