Brainstem brings Web3 fitness trackers to the Economy of Things on peaq
What is happening?
Brainstem, a scalable decentralized platform for collecting health data from wearable devices, joins the peaqosystem to let people monetize the health data that Big Tech has so far scooped up for free.
Why is it important?
Brainstem will help health researchers around the world get the data they need in a fair and compliant way. Its decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) will promote wellness while returning people the ownership over some of their personal data.
What does it mean for the community?
Soon, you won’t have to separate with peaq when going on a jog (yes, we cry every time too). Also, another DePIN in town will bring more network activity and create more value for everyone involved, adding to what’s already possible in the Economy of Things today.
The phrase “I like to watch you sleep” can come off as either questionably romantic or I’ll-call-the-cops creepy depending on who you hear it from. On this scale from your crush to the neighborhood maniac, a humble fitness tracker sits somewhere in the uncomfortable middle.
On the one hand, it’s good to have all the handy data on your nap-nap time. These devices are also good at motivating you to walk more, to work out, and to do other healthy things. Furthermore, in our age of AI, this data has a ton of value for researchers. Keeping track of a nation’s health, building predictive models and personalized health adviser bots, the sky's the limit for innovation.
On the other hand, there’s a ton of other people who’d like to have all that data. In many cases, the manufacturers are quite willing to oblige, selling this obviously personal data to third parties. And, of course, there’s hackers who are quite interested in the data these devices collect too. If this data is stored the Web2 way, in centralized repositories, it’s basically served on a plate. Oh, and there’s also the tale of a fitness app revealing the locations of U.S. military bases! Web2 being Web2, as usual.
And, as usual, things don’t have to be this way. Brainstem Digital Health is building a scalable decentralized platform for collecting data that wellness researchers around the world can tap for studies and AI models. A key part of this platform is a wearable — a health tracker — that gives you back the ownership over the data that other devices scoop up like no tomorrow. And, you guessed it right, this project is coming to peaq.
10,000 steps per block
As part of the integration, Brainstem will outfit its health trackers with self-sovereign peaq IDs. The devices will use these IDs to sign the data that they collect, which would enable people to authenticate these records. Brainstem will also enable the community to monetize their health data on the peaq’s instance of the Gaia-X data marketplace. The wearables will make up a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) for gathering privacy-first health data on peaq.
At the initial stage, Brainstem will link its app with the peaq network’s testnet. It will also add support for wallets compatible with peaq and update the app’s interface to work with them. Further on, it will outfit all of the wearables in its DePIN with decentralized peaq IDs, and the data marketplace integration is the final leg of this journey. Brainstem users will be able to earn extra rewards from peaq’s mechanism redistributing a fraction of the network fees between connected device owners.
The Gaia-X market integration will connect the Brainstem DePIN with the EU-backed project bringing top enterprises, research institutions, and Web3 startups together. Gaia-X is working toward ensuring Europe’s digital sovereignty and moving the tech space toward more transparency and privacy. As part of moveID, a Bosch-led project in the Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility family, peaq is co-creating the standards and infrastructure for connected mobility of tomorrow.
“Health and Fitness trackers are capable of collecting troves of accurate, objective data that can help inform healthcare and wellness professionals and researchers, but this shouldn’t come at the expense of privacy. We are changing the paradigm by providing a tool that empowers individuals and gives them full control and ownership over their data. peaq is a perfect home for our project thanks to its DePIN focus and device-centric features and economics that will enable us to build and scale fast.”
— Max Campbell, Brainstem’s co-founder.
“The AI revolution has a lot in store for health and wellness, but it needs quality and privacy-compliant data for that,” “Brainstems solves this puzzle by leveraging the Web3 stack. We are excited to see it join the peaq ecosystem and are confident it will bring a lot of value to the community.”
— Till Wendler, co-founder of peaq.
